2009: 28 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 2 blocked kicks
Terrence Cody Scouting Report
Strengths:
Terrence Cody is not a versatile defensive tackle, but he is exceptional at what he does. Cody was the anchor of Alabama's stingy 3-4 defense. He clogged running lanes and drove double-teams backwards for the Tide. The two-year starter made a significant impact on Alabama's defense right from the start. Cody has incredible size and power and makes running inside unproductive for offenses. The All-American has long arms and is athletic. Cody has quick feet and comes out of his stance with authority. "Mount Cody" has a flair for the dramatic and has come through with some disruptive plays at critical times. The two-time All-SEC defender can bend his knees and play with leverage. This combined with his tremendous strength in his hips and legs make him just about immovable. His hand use is decent and when he puts his big mitts on an offensive lineman's breastplate, it is all over.
Weaknesses:
Cody did not play on passing downs for the Crimson Tide because he never reached the weight (348 pounds) that Coach Saban set for him. He does not have good endurance and will tire and have to be substituted for in games. Cody has limited pass rush potential with really only one move (the bull rush). His weight and conditioning tend to fluctuate and could always be an issue.
Football Character & Mental Make-Up:
The finalist for the Nagurski Trophy did not miss practice and was enthusiastic. He battled weight issues at Alabama, but did drop enough pounds to be an All-American. The universities that passed on recruiting him because they thought he would eat his way off the team were proven wrong. Cody was 370 pounds at the Senior Bowl, but has turned his conditioning up a notch this off-season. He was impressive at the Alabama pro day when he weighed 348 pounds and his feet looked light. His goal is to weigh 340 pounds and it looks like he will do it. Cody was well liked by his teammates and coaches. He kept the locker room loose with his playful personality. Cody does care about the game and his teammates.
Terrence Cody Draft Value
Rating:
Top of the 2nd Round
NOTE: Our ratings are NOT where we predict a player will be drafted, but rather, where we believe a player SHOULD be drafted based upon future production.
Forecast:
Terrence Cody is our highest rated nose tackle in the 2010 NFL Draft. If he maintains his weight in the 340 to 350 range, then he is going to be a terrific nose tackle. A nose tackle is not a glamorous position that produces impressive statistics. However, there is a reason why Nick Saban just had to have Cody man the middle of his defense. Alabama was able to turn virtually every opponent into a one-dimensional attack with Cody and company stifling the run. The fundamentals of strong defense remain to stop the run and then go after the quarterback. Cody is a freak player at what he does. We would not be surprised if he was selected late in the 1st round. The Chargers' run defense was not the same when Jamal Williams went down with an injury. San Diego released Williams due to his age and the wear and tear on his body. The Jets and Cowboys could surprise and consider Cody to man their nose, depending on who is still available.
Note: We put as much effort into researching a player’s football character (passion or interest in the game) and mental make-up as we do grading game film. Why? Because it is just as important (perhaps more so) as a player’s physical tools. Our scouting reports reflect this emphasis on capturing the total picture.
